Pear-fect for Snacking
Pears are naturally sweet, high in fibre and vitamin C, and wonderfully soft for little mouths. They’re perfect for young eaters, super versatile, and available in several delicious British varieties.
On this page, we’ll show you how to pick, prep and serve pears with confidence—plus simple snack ideas to keep things fun and balanced.
How to Shop, Store & Prep Pears
Shopper Guide
Look for fruit that gives slightly when gently pressed near the stem. Most pears ripen best after being picked, so firm pears will be ready to eat at home after sitting out for a few days!
Storage
Store unripe pears at room temperature, then move ripe ones to the fridge where they’ll last 2–3 more days. Keep them in the fridge and eat within a few days. Only rinse right before eating to prevent them spoiling.
Nutrition
Pears are a wonderfully gentle and nutritious fruit for your child. They are an excellent source of dietary fibre, which is crucial for maintaining a healthy digestive system and ensuring regular bowel movements. Pears also provide essential nutrients like vitamin C, which helps to boost the immune system, and vitamin K, important for blood clotting and healthy bones. Being a low-acidity fruit, they are typically very easy on a child’s stomach. The natural sugars in pears offer a healthy source of energy, making them a perfect, hydrating snack for active children.
Preparation
Pears are a wonderfully versatile fruit for your child. When ripe and juicy, they are perfect eaten fresh—simply slice them up to avoid any mess. For a fun twist, create pear “boats” by cutting them in half and scooping out the core, then fill with yoghurt, soft cheese or raisins and seeds or granola. Pears are also delicious gently stewed until soft and served with greek yoghurt and cinnamon or just a naturally sweet topping for porridge, breakfast cereal or toast. You can even grate them into muffins and cakes for added moisture and a subtle sweetness your children will love.
Seasonality
British pears are simply unbeatable for their freshness and flavour. Grown in local orchards, they travel fewer miles to reach your home, ensuring a perfectly ripe, juicy, and crisp texture. From the well-loved Conference to the sweet Comice, supporting British growers means enjoying exceptional quality while celebrating our wonderful home-grown produce. The pear season generally runs from late summer to late winter, with peak availability typically from September to November
Kids in the Kitchen
They can rinse the pears, help slice soft ripe pears with butter knives or kid knives, or mash soft pears into yoghurt or porridge.
