Berry, Berry Tasty
British berries are more than just a pretty snack—they’re powerhouses of vitamin C, fibre and natural sweetness.
Whether eaten by the handful, mixed into yoghurt, or frozen into fruity lollies, berries bring colour, variety, and big appeal to kids’ snacks.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to pick, store, and serve British berries—and share snack ideas you’ll want to keep on repeat.
Shopper Guide
Look for plump, bright, and dry berries with no mush or mould. Buy British and in season when you can for the best flavour and price.
Storage
Keep them in the fridge and eat within a few days. Only rinse right before eating to prevent them spoiling.
You can freeze berries! Spread them on a tray, freeze, then transfer to bags—perfect for smoothies, lollies or topping yogurt or porridge
Nutrition
Berries are a nutritional powerhouse for growing children. Packed with essential vitamins like Vitamin C to support a healthy immune system and Vitamin K for bone development, they are a fantastic addition to your child’s diet. Berries are also loaded with antioxidants, such as anthocyanins, which give them their vibrant colours and help protect your child’s body from harmful free radicals. Furthermore, their high fibre content aids in healthy digestion and helps maintain stable energy levels, making them a perfect, naturally sweet snack for active kids.
Preparation
For a quick and easy snack, simply wash them thoroughly and serve them fresh in a bowl. You can get creative by threading a mix of colourful berries like strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries onto skewers for a fun and healthy kebab. Blend them into smoothies with yoghurt and a banana, add them to breakfast cereals or you simply mash them slightly to create a delicious topping for pancakes, porridge, or natural yoghurt. Seasonality
Look out for fresher and tastier in-season British berries
May: start with strawberries
June: Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries
July: They are all in season, at the best, this is great time to start freezing them for winter
August: Last chance for British strawberries
September: the end of the British berry season – don’t forget to check you’ve frozen enough to see you through to May.
Frozen
For the best results when freezing berries, start by gently washing and thoroughly patting them dry. Arrange the dry berries in a single layer on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, ensuring they don’t touch. Place the tray in the freezer until the berries are solid. Once frozen, transfer them to a labelled freezer-safe bag or container. This method prevents them from clumping together, so you can easily take out what you need.
